The territory of Ararat region was a part of Ayrarat province of historical Armenia. In the middle ages this province was known as a province of capital cities. The capitals Artashat and Dvin were also located here. In terms of tourism, Ararat region is interesting for its Khor Virap monastic complex and a number of ancient sights. Every day a great number of tourists take part in one day tours from Yerevan to Khor Virap. The prices for the tours are quite affordable.
